Volunteer with Our Kids Count

Volunteering at Our Kids Count is one of the most direct ways you can make a difference for families in Thunder Bay. Whether you have a few hours a month or you're ready to show up every week, there's a role here that fits. Our programs run because of people like you, and we'd love to have you on the team.

Where You Can Help

At our programs

Help facilitate weekly programs — setting up spaces, preparing food, running activities, or simply being a warm and welcoming presence for the families who come through our doors. Opportunities include morning drop-ins, community kitchens, the K.I.C.K. cooking program for kids, and more.

At our fundraising events

Our biggest events of the year — the BBBS Golf Tournament, MEGABike, Haunted Harbour, For the Love of Pizza, and our monthly Community Breakfasts — all depend on people willing to show up and make it happen. Event volunteering is active, social, and a great way to plug into the Thunder Bay community.

As a Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor

Our BBBS program matches trained volunteer mentors with young people ages 7–17 for one-on-one support in school and community settings. This is a meaningful, longer-term commitment that makes a real difference in a young person's life. Mentors must be 18 or older.

On the Planning Team

The Planning Team is how OKC keeps its programs grounded in the real needs of the community. Participants and community members meet weekly to discuss what's happening at the centres, share ideas, and help shape program decisions. If you want a voice in how OKC grows and serves Thunder Bay, this is the place.

In the Food Cupboard

Help run our Emergency Food Cupboard by receiving families, organizing food stock, and ensuring the space runs smoothly during open hours.

At Community Breakfasts

Help prepare and serve a free, hot breakfast for the whole community on the second Saturday of every month at our Mackenzie location. A great one-time or recurring volunteer option.

Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Kitchen helpers must be 15 or older. Raffle ticket sellers and BBBS mentors must be 18 or older. All applicants will be contacted for a brief conversation to discuss available opportunities and find the best fit.
